Sarah Palin's Song Choice Angers Heart
The latest band to unwittingly stumble into the minefield of political song usage is Heart, who immediately took offence at Republican Sarah Palin's use of their 1977 track Barracuda as some sort of celebratory tune at the Republican National Convention. "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women," Heart's Nancy Wilson angrily told Entertainment Weekly.

DOWNLOAD: MIT - Rauch (Coma remix) (mp3)
It's Friday remix time. Cologne's synthtastic bleep-pop movers MIT have been taken over by fellow Germanic electro types Coma, and its Knife-meets-DFA-on-the-foreign-exchange feel is ever so slightly terrifying. But also invigorating. Very good.

DOWNLOAD: Land Of Talk - Some Are Lakes (mp3)
Last year's Applause Cheer Boo Hiss EP showed that Land Of Talk weren't just a bunch of Metric copyists, as their detractors had it, and the fine Speak To Me Bones (video below) shone out. Now they're back with a full album, Some Are Lakes, on One Little Indian in the UK. Here's the title track:

Beyoncé Is 'Over Being A Pop Star'
It sounds like Beyoncé is taking the Diddy path to effective communication, after an interview with Marie Claire in which she revealed she has out-of-body experiences. She then told the interviewer that she had 10 fingers and toes, was an Olympic gold medallist at rumpy pumpy and asked if Saudi Arabia could send her some oil. Probably.

LISTEN: Starf*cker - Burnin' Up
Googling Starfucker is not an easy task, especially as they share a name with a Belgian rock band whose current single is a plodding cover of I Heard It Through The Grapevine. But this is not them. Our Starfucker are from Portland, Oregon, like many a good band, and they are synthily gorgeous. And they have done a brilliant cover of Madonna's Burnin' Up.

Noel Gallagher: 'No Female Artists Allowed'
Noel out of Oasis has really taken to this blogging thing, but all it's really doing is giving an insight into how much of a tool he is. He's posted a list of his "top 10 bands of all time", but with a few requirements: no solo artists (ok, that makes sense), no collectives like Public Enemy (again, we understand) and "no female artists allowed". Oh.

Usher Revives Old Riot Grrrl Trend
We'd never have pegged him as a Bikini Kill fan, but **Usher** is rolling out one of their oldest ideas - he's performing a series of women-only shows across America. Called One Night Stand. Which is all sorts of yuk.

Cat Power Covers Bowie For Car Ad
She's really got the covers bug, that Cat Power. Here's her version of Space Oddity soundtracking a car advert in the States. It's dreamy, in that Chan drawl sort of way, and, like Pitchfork says, it makes you want to hear more than a 30-second clip. Your verdict?

Vampire Weekend Join Iceland Airwaves Line-Up
If you're a broadsheet type, then you'll be aware that festival season is supposed to end with Bestival. Not so! Even though it's quite far away (October) and we're not sure if we're going yet, we're getting quite excited about Iceland Airwaves, partly because it's in Iceland which is dead exotic, and partly because the line-up is looking extremely tasty. And that's tasty + Vampire Weekend, as of today.

Tina Turner Saves Amy Winehouse Via YouTube Buddhism
Nope, we've not just hit the random headline generator - today's Sun assures us that the reason Amy failed to turn up to her French festival show was "because she was in a state of Buddhist relaxation". The ever-reliable A.Source adds, "Amy has also been watching the interview clip of Tina Turner chanting on YouTube and she reckons it's already affecting her in a positive way."

DOWNLOAD: Times New Viking - Call & Respond (mp3)
We like it when bands give you a little something extra. Times New Viking, the abrasive font-pun-lovers we wrote about back in April, are releasing their five-track Stay Awake EP at the end of October. And if you order it here you get a free limited silk-screened poster that is lovely.

Chris Martin Goes Butch
Has Chris Martin been watching Ross Kemp On Gangs? First he starts sporting a shaven bonce (leading to a "baldplay" tag from The Sun). Now he's telling the Mirror all about his love of tattoos. "The best buzz ever," says C-Mart. "I recommend getting a tattoo whether you are 70 or 12 - actually, maybe not 12, I think that might be a bit too young."
