Another Well Good Thing Out On Monday: Robert Wyatt

By Wendy Roby

Alt textWe perhaps unfairly malign gentlemen of the bearded persuasion round these parts. To make up for it, here is the new videothing from top rock Grandpa, Robert Wyatt, which is out on Monday. They are calling it a 'hymn to the sensuality of a Summers evening' which is pretty ill-timed considering it is bloody October, but it looks nice so we forgive them.

Now then, considering Mr Wyatt is responsible for some of the noodliest abominations of prog, it is heartening to see him following up on collabos with Bjork and playing the drums for O.A.Pash David Byrne with a PROPER pop song about why dancing is like, really good. He has done it with a French person what is called Bertrand, and it has unintentional LOLs, wacka-wacka 70s guitars, amusingly stilted vocals, prismy visuals and disco strings. Here it is:

Very nice. But before we get all gushy on Bob's bottom, LET US NOT FORGET THAT HE WAS IN SOFT MACHINE. And they ended up thinking this sort of thing was acceptable:

WORST SONG EVER.

Lastly, one amazing thing we discovered on Wikipedia when we were 'researching' this - apparently some wag has coined the verb "Wyatting", to describe the practice of playing weird tracks on a pub jukebox to annoy the other pub goers. This is probably only amusing if you are aware of Bob in the first place, but it is a good pop fact even if you think his beard needs a bit of a tidy/do not listen to old blokes.
